But here at the MVR Agency and\u00a0 our friends at MAXONS hope that through spreading awareness, we can change that and keep our clients and their families safe!<\/p>\n<p>This month, we would like to help ensure that you and your loved ones are prepared.\u00a0 Here are 10 simple tips to help you avoid fires and reduce the risk of injury should one occur:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li><strong>Smoke Alarms<\/strong> &#8211; Smoke alarms are widely available and inexpensive.\u00a0 Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home and office and test it monthly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prevent Electrical Fires<\/strong> &#8211; Don&#8217;t overload circuits or extension cords.\u00a0 Cords and wires should never be placed\u00a0 under rugs or in high traffic areas.\u00a0 Avoid loose electrical connections by checking the fit of the plug in the wall outlet.\u00a0 If the plug loosely fits, inspect the outlet right away.\u00a0 A poor connection between the plug and the outlet can cause overheating and can start a fire in minutes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep Plugs Safe<\/strong> &#8211; Unplug all appliances when not in use.\u00a0 Follow the manufacturer&#8217;s safety precautions and use your senses to spot any potential disasters.\u00a0 If a plug is overheating, smells strange, shorts out or sparks &#8211; the appliance should be shut off immediately, then replaced or repaired.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alternate Heaters<\/strong> &#8211; Make sure there is ample space around any portable heating unit.\u00a0 Anything that could catch fire should be at least three feet away.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fire Safety Sprinklers<\/strong> &#8211; When combined with working smoke alarms, fire sprinklers greatly increase your chance of surviving a fire.\u00a0 Sprinklers are affordable and they can increase property value and lower insurance rates.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Create An Escape Route<\/strong> &#8211; Create and practice your escape plan from every room in your office or house.\u00a0 Practice staying low to the floor and checking for hot doors using the back of your hand.\u00a0 It&#8217;s just like a routine school fire drill &#8211; but in your home.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Position Appliances Carefully<\/strong> &#8211; Try to keep TV sets and appliances away from windows with curtains.\u00a0 If there is a wiring problem, curtains can spread a fire quickly.\u00a0 Additionally, keeping your appliances away from water sources (like rain coming in from windows) can help prevent wiring damage which can lead to a fire.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clean Dryer Vents<\/strong> &#8211; Clothes dryers often start fires in residential areas.\u00a0 Clean the lint filter every time you start a load of clothes to dry or after the drying cycle is complete.\u00a0 Make sure your exhaust duct is made of metal tubing and not plastic or foil.\u00a0 Clean the exhaust duct with a good quality dryer vent brush to prevent blockage &amp; check for lint build up behind the dryer at least twice a year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be Careful Around the Holidays<\/strong> &#8211; Check all of your lights prior to stringing them up and dispose of anything with frayed or exposed wires.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conduct Regular Inspections<\/strong> &#8211; Check all of your electronic equipment and wiring at least once a month.\u00a0 Taking a little time to do this each month can really pay off.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Following these simple tips could potentially save your life or the life of a loved one.\u00a0 Pass this list on to your friends and family and make this fire prevention month count!<\/p>\n<p>Stay safe,<\/p>\n<p>From your friends at MVR Insurance Agency and Maxons<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to FEMA, most Americans underestimate their risk for fire, and many either lack emergency response plans &#8211; or fail to practice them with fire drills.
